There Are No Left Handed People in China??? We're Calling BS
There are no left-handers or less than 1% in China says surveys conducted since the 1980s. But, how is that? World Atlas reports it as being the 4th largest country in the world. How can a country so big have so few left handers? We are calling bullcrap on these statistics! What? They don't have any gay Chinese people either? What about Afro-Asians? I'm pretty sure they do. As a matter or fact, I know they do. Every country does.
Plenty of Chinese are born left-handed—probably about 10-12 percent of the population, based on statistics from other countries—but sadly they aren't allowed to stay that way.
According to the US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health, "Surveys of Chinese students since the 1980s report that less than 1% are left-handed. This is an extraordinarily low number given the generally accepted view that between 10 and 12% of humans are left-handed. Are there actually very few left-handers in China and, if so, why? A number of sometimes overlapping reasons have shaped Chinese attitudes toward left-handedness. Some of these reflect the transcendent human reactions to biological laterality. Others have been shaped by Chinese historical and cultural experience. What is true in China can be identified in other societies: attitudes and practices toward left-handers have been and continue to be shaped by over-determined forces, which at the same time transcend specific cultures, while they respond to historical and cultural pressures. Like the Chinese, many North and East African peoples attempt to 'cure' left-handedness by a combination of restraints and severe punishments. Religion has often reinforced these practices. In China, we can see how a combination of traditional values and practical considerations seems to have merged to reduce both the actual and reported prevalence of left-handedness. When we add in the population of India, and much of the remaining Islamic world, we can conclude that for two-thirds of the world's population, being born left-handed exposes one to discrimination and stigma."
The National reports that Chinese people are now standing up for their rights. They are not allowing those old school myths and stigmas to impact their children's futures. Forcing someone to use their non dominant hand, be it right or left, is ridiculous. As a huge family person myself, I highly believe in passing down traditions to my children. But, when you know better, you do better. Forcing someone to use their non dominant hand causes all types of mental and emotional issues and this practice needs to be stopped. Great job China for joining the fight!
