Left Handers Day

Left Handers' Day | Monday August 13, 2018

International Left Handers' Day is on a Monday this year (2018), but is always celebrated on August 13th.  This is a day designated to celebrate lefties and left-handedness.

Left Handers, also referred to as Southpaws, are the butt of more than their share of jokes all year long. But, hey, lefties have a day!  How about that.

The world is built for right handers. Here are some common ones:

  • In school, left handed desks are nonexistent
  • Costly left handed items
  • Scissors for for right handers. Only a lefty would understand this.

Left handers certainly earned the right to have a day dedicated to them. August 13th is that day. Take a minute to appreciate your left handed friends and loved ones. Take them out for brunch, lunch and/or dinner.

Left Handed Facts (Myths?)

  • Sinistrophobia is the fear of left-handedness or things on the left side.
  • While many people are left handed, very few are 100% left handed. Since left-handedness is/was considered evil, we think this ambidexterity is due to being forced to use the right hand.
  • Lefties are also called "southpaws". The term was coined in baseball to describe a left handed pitcher.
  • Only about 10% of the population is left handed.
  • During the 1600's people, thought left handers were witches and warlocks. 
  • International Left Hander's Day was first celebrated on August 13, 1976. It was started by Lefthander's International.
  • It is believed that all polar bears are left handed..
  • There is a rumor that octopuses have but one right hand.

Did you know that there is a city in America named Left Hand, Virginia?  How cool is that! Left Hand, Virginia is an unincorporated community in southeastern Roane County, West Virginia.

So, lefties, August 13th is your day!  Celebrate it doing whatever you heck you wanna do.  #leftypride
